A New Triangle, Old Uncertainties

On August 7, 2026, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan signed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement in Riyadh. The statement was vague, but the signal was clear: any armed attack on one will be regarded as an attack on all.

This is the first major realignment in West Asia since the US-Iran war. It is being called a “Muslim NATO.” The Saudi government denies this. It says the pact is not sectarian and not aimed at any specific country.  But the context tells a different story.

For years, the region has been shifting. The Abraham Accords, Iran’s nuclear program, and now the war in Gaza have forced states to rethink security. Saudi Arabia, which once relied entirely on the US, now sees limits to that dependence. Trump’s last-minute withdrawal from defense deals made Riyadh nervous.

Enter Turkey and Pakistan. Turkey brings a growing defense industry and ambitions of Sunni leadership. Pakistan brings a 660,000-strong army and nuclear weapons. Together, they give Saudi Arabia options beyond Washington.

But this triangle is built on shaky ground. Turkey and Pakistan have a fraught history with Saudi Arabia. In 2018, Turkish leaks over the Khashoggi murder embarrassed Riyadh. Pakistan’s military has been pulled into Saudi-led coalitions before, with mixed results. And both Turkey and Pakistan share borders with Iran — a country Saudi Arabia still views with suspicion.

For India, the MJDA matters. The Gulf is home to 9 million Indians. Our energy, remittances, and trade depend on stability there. A new security bloc could complicate that. If the pact pulls the region into a low-burn conflict, oil prices will rise. If it deters aggression, it may create space for diplomacy.

India’s approach must be pragmatic. We cannot afford to pick sides in a Sunni-Shia cold war. We must engage all three — Saudi, Turkey, Pakistan — while deepening ties with the UAE, Israel, and Iran where possible. Our interest is not in alliances, but in stability.

The MJDA may turn out to be symbolic. Or it may become the core of a new security architecture. Either way, New Delhi must watch closely. In a region where yesterday’s partner can be tomorrow’s rival, India needs clarity, not illusions.
