Sharks As Scientists!

US researchers are tagging mako sharks with sensors to track hurricanes. Sounds strange. It works.

These sharks swim through the ocean column where hurricanes get their energy. The tags measure temperature, salinity, and depth. Data is beamed to satellites. Scientists get real-time readings from places ships and buoys never reach.

Why sharks? Because they go where we don’t. The Gulf Stream, the deep Atlantic, storm paths. A tagged shark can give us 10x more data than a research vessel at 1/100th the cost.

This is not new. Animals have been “biosensors” for years — elephant seals in Antarctica, turtles in the Pacific. But using apex predators to track storm fuel is clever.

Hurricane prediction has improved, but intensity forecasting is still weak. We know where a storm will go. We don’t know how strong it will get. Ocean heat is the answer. And sharks swim through it.

There are caveats. Tagging is expensive. Not all sharks survive. And we must ensure this doesn’t become an excuse to harm marine life.

But the principle is solid: work with nature, not just against it. Climate change means more intense storms. If a mako shark can help us save a coastal town, that’s science at its best.

The ocean is talking. For once, we’re learning to listen through its top predators.
