The Cult Trap
Democracy dies when leaders become messiahs

In 1937, Jawaharlal Nehru wrote anonymously in The Modern Review warning that “Caesarism” could stunt India’s freedom. In 1949, Ambedkar told the Constituent Assembly that “Bhakti in politics is a sure road to degradation and to eventual dictatorship.”

They were warning us about personality cults.

The problem isn’t strong leaders. It’s leaders who become larger than institutions. When people outsource judgment to one person, democracy becomes theater. Citizens become spectators. Accountability dies.

We see it everywhere now. The political strongman who promises to cut through inefficiency. The tech billionaire who promises to save us. Social media amplifies this — turning leaders into brands, and dissent into treason.

Nehru and Ambedkar knew devotion belongs in temples, not in Parliament. A republic depends on habits: skepticism, debate, and the willingness to question power.

The tragedy of personality cults is they make us confuse admiration with patriotism. They tell us one person can fix everything. History says no one can.

Democracies need visionaries. But they also need citizens who refuse to worship them. Otherwise, we don’t get leadership. We get dependence.

India’s founders feared this. 75 years later, their warning is more relevant than ever.
