A warning from the ‘rivers of ice’
A new study says glaciers in Ladakh’s Zanskar region are moving 2.4 meters per year slower than 30 years ago. They are thinning, losing mass, and becoming less dynamic.
This matters because glaciers are Ladakh’s water towers. They store winter snow and release it in summer, feeding the Indus basin when rainfall is scarce. Faster melt means more water now — “peak water.” But once the ice is gone, the flow will drop sharply.
Scientists say this slowdown is linked to warming. Thinner glaciers have less driving force. They slide less. It’s a sign the system is under stress.
The implications are long-term: water security, agriculture, and hydropower in the Himalayas and downstream. Millions depend on these rivers.
The study also reminds us that satellite data must be backed by ground measurements. Ladakh’s glaciers are remote, but not immune to climate change. Similar slowdowns are being reported in the Alps, Andes, and Tibetan plateau.
India’s climate policy often focuses on emissions and renewables. It must also focus on adaptation — water management, glacier monitoring, and community planning in mountain regions.
Ladakh’s ‘rivers of ice’ are telling us something. They are slowing down because the mountains are warming up. If we don’t listen now, we’ll pay later when the rivers run dry.
