Heart-wrenching news has emerged from Pakistan's Punjab province, where a joyous occasion turned into a tragedy. On Tuesday, in the Kot Addu area of Muzaffargarh district, a three-wheeled vehicle (rickshaw) lost control and plunged into the Muzaffargarh Canal. Fifteen members of the same family—including women and children—lost their lives in this horrific accident. The incident occurred while the victims were traveling from one village to another to attend a wedding.
According to preliminary investigations and officials, the accident was caused by the vehicle's high speed. The wedding convoy included three rickshaws; one of them, carrying 26 people, suddenly lost its balance and plunged straight into the deep canal. The canal is reported to be 12 to 15 feet deep and approximately 100 to 120 feet wide, with a strong current that left the passengers with no chance to save themselves.
Upon receiving news of the incident, locals and 'Rescue 1122' teams launched a rescue operation. Three passengers managed to swim to safety and alert the authorities; subsequently, eight people were rescued and taken to the hospital. Twelve bodies were recovered by late Tuesday night, while three more were found during the search operation on Wednesday, bringing the total death toll to 15. The bodies had been swept away to distances ranging from 5 to 20 kilometers from the accident site.
Expressing grief over the tragedy, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz conveyed her deepest condolences to the families of the deceased. She directed the local administration to ensure the best medical facilities for the injured and to show no laxity in relief operations. Administrative officials have viewed this incident as a serious warning and have called for strict measures against overloading and speeding in public transport. This accident once again highlights the dismal state of road safety and the disregard for traffic regulations in Pakistan's rural areas. During the wedding season, it is common practice in rural regions to transport more passengers than a vehicle's capacity allows—a practice that often proves fatal. Currently, a pall of gloom hangs over the area, and the bereaved families are struggling to cope with this unbearable loss. Stringent safety and preventive measures have been implemented at the site to ensure such incidents do not recur in the future.
