Shipwreck Without a Wave

The 2025 Kerala oil spill occurred after the Liberian-flagged vessel MSC Elsa 3 capsized in the Arabian Sea on May 25, near Kochi due to flooding in one of its compartments. The vessel was carrying 640 containers, including hazardous materials such as calcium carbide and sulphur, alongside the diesel and furnace oil. All 24 crew members, including the captain and engineers aboard were safely rescued by the Indian Navy and Coast Guard after a coordinated rescue operation. A study by NCSM found no measurable ecological or socio-economic damage to the islands.

That is good news. But it is not the whole story. The incident exposed how vulnerable island ecosystems are to maritime accidents. Lakshadweep has no large-scale spill response system. INCOIS models showed containers could drift to Kollam in 48 hours. Phytoplankton and coral were checked, and thankfully remained within baseline.

During the journey from Vizhinjam to Kochi, the ship’s ballast water system failed first, and as a result, the crew could not stop the progressive flooding into the ballast tanks. The ship’s safety management system was reported to be deficient, especially regarding maintenance procedures and spare parts management. The ship had tilted to about 26 degrees, causing several container stacks to shift, further compromising the ship’s stability.

Analytically, "no impact" does not mean "no risk". India’s coastline handles 95% of trade by volume. Yet island states lack dedicated contingency plans. We rely on post-incident studies instead of pre-incident readiness. The investigation also revealed that the ship already had many defects in previous inspection reports, but were not sufficiently repaired or replaced. They had relied on temporary fixes, which created points of failure throughout the system.

The lesson: strengthen early warning systems, island contingency plans, and real-time monitoring. Climate change is making seas rougher. More ships = more risk. Lakshadweep dodged a bullet this time. We cannot count on luck next time. Maritime safety is coastal security.
