NTA retest throws UGC-NET plans into chaos. The National Testing Agency’s decision to re-conduct the UGC-NET exam for English, Commerce and Sociology has derailed months of planning for thousands of aspirants.

The retest was announced after candidates flagged multiple errors in the June paper. Sociologist Govind Sadashiv Ghurye was misspelt as “Ghunye”. A R Desai became “A K Desai”. Martha Nussbaum was written as “Martha Nuspath”. The NTA said the papers did not meet standards of a “fair and error-free examination”.

For aspirants, the cost is time. Muneer Ahmad Kumar, 26, from J&K said his timeline to apply for PhD and assistant professor posts is now disrupted. “Had things gone as scheduled, I could have explored more options,” he said.

Vithika Sharma, 25, from Rajasthan lost a chance to apply for an assistant professor vacancy in Himachal Pradesh that closed on June 25. “I have essentially lost this major career opportunity,” she said.

Rajni Panda, 24, from Jaipur said she will now have to travel again to the exam city. “Many students are facing similar situations due to jobs and other commitments.”

The NTA cited typographical and factual errors and said it will allow candidates to change exam centres. But students question the delay. “Anyone who had studied Sociology could have identified the errors in one go,” said Vithika.

The retest is scheduled for September, giving students just 20 days to prepare again after months of study. For many, it’s not just a delay but a loss of opportunity.

The episode highlights the pressure on the NTA, which conducts multiple national exams. One error can cascade into careers, admissions and jobs. For aspirants, the demand is simple: accuracy the first time.
