Dalal Street witnessed a bloodbath that analysts are calling a classic risk-off move. BSE Sensex crashed over 700 points intraday, Nifty slipped below 24,800. In a matter of minutes, market capitalization fell by nearly Rs 5 lakh crore. The trigger is external, not domestic. Two shocks collided - US-Iran escalation threatening oil, and crude jumping to $100. Both are negative for an oil-importing economy like India.

The channel is FII selling. In last three trading sessions, FIIs have net sold Rs 12,500 crore. When geopolitical risk rises, global funds pull money from Emerging Markets and rush to safe havens - US Dollar, Gold, US Treasuries. Gold is already at $2,450/oz. Dollar Index at 105. So India sees outflow even though domestic fundamentals - GDP 7.8% Q1, GST collections strong - are intact.

Sectorally, damage is concentrated. Banking fell 2.1% because higher oil = higher inflation = delayed rate cuts. Auto fell 2.4% because higher fuel cost = lower demand and margin hit. Paint companies - Asian Paints, Berger - fell 3-4% because crude derivatives are raw material. Aviation and logistics also down.

For retail investors, this is a stress test. In last 3 years, 4.2 crore new demat accounts opened via SIPs and mutual funds. Most have not seen a geopolitical crash. Many bought at high valuations. Panic selling at low is their biggest risk. Advisors are telling clients - don't break SIP, asset allocation is your shield.

The larger lesson is structural - India's market may be driven by domestic flows, but it is globally priced. Domestic economy can grow at 7%, but if Hormuz closes, FIIs will sell. Until geopolitical peace returns, volatility will stay. VIX has already jumped 18% in a week.
