NEW DELHI — India is world's largest rice producer, largest wheat stock holder, 81 crore people get 5 kg free grain under PMGKAY, yet Global Hunger Index 2026 puts it at 100th among 122 countries, score 24.1 — serious hunger — behind Sri Lanka (53rd, 10.2), Nepal (72nd, 14.5), Bangladesh (84th, 19.2), ahead only of Pakistan (106th, 25.5) and Afghanistan (108th).

Report released October 14 by Welthungerhilfe Germany and Concern Worldwide Ireland combines four indicators — undernourishment 9.8% of population, child stunting 29.3%, child wasting 19%, under-five mortality 2.7%. Global average score is 18.1, South Asia 23.5. India is worse than both.

Headline improvement — from 102nd of 123 in 2025 to 100th now, score from 25.8 in 2018 to 24.1 now — hides slowdown. Score improved 8.2 points between 2006-2012 (37 to 28.8), but only 1.7 points between 2018-2026. Progress stalled.

Analytical breakdown:

Undernourishment 9.8%: Down from 18.1% in 2000, 14.8% in 2012. Still means 14 crore Indians calorie-insufficient despite buffer stock of 650 lakh tonnes, three times requirement. Free grain solves hunger, not nutrition — rice-wheat diet gives calories, not protein, micronutrients.

Stunting 29.3%: Down from 50% in 2000, 38% in 2012 — chronic malnutrition from years of inadequate diet, maternal anaemia, poor sanitation. Still 4 crore children low height-for-age, irreversible after age 2. Poshan Abhiyan 2.0 spent ₹12,000 crore but NFHS-5 shows 57% women anaemic, only 11% children get minimum acceptable diet.

Wasting 19%: Acute crisis — low weight-for-height, highest in South Asia, up from 16.9% previous period. Bangladesh 12.9%, Nepal 12%, Sri Lanka 12%. South Asia wasting average 15.8% highest among world regions. Wasting means child lost weight recently — infection, diarrhoea, skipped meal. India runs ICDS, mid-day meal for 11.8 crore children, yet wasted children 1.8 crore.

Mortality 2.7%: Down from 9.1% in 2000 — public health success — IMR 28, institutional delivery 89%, but still 7 lakh under-five deaths yearly.

Why behind neighbours? Nepal cut score 18.4 to 14.5 (3.9 points) vs India 1.7 — invested in community health volunteers, dietary diversity. Bangladesh cut 20 to 19.2 while improving protein intake — fish, eggs, poultry grew 80% since 2010. Sri Lanka 11.4 to 10.2 despite economic crisis — maintained universal PDS with pulses.

Report theme 2026 — No Security Without Food Security — warns El Niño may cause deficient monsoon — IMD forecast 60% probability below-normal rainfall across Monsoon Core Zone, which grows 60% pulses, 80% oilseeds. Plus food inflation 7.8%, international aid down 12% after Ukraine war.

India's growth story — $3.8 trillion economy, $600 bn forex, 100 unicorns — coexists with hunger map — tribal districts in Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh show stunting 45%, wasting 28%, same as sub-Saharan Africa.

Government contests methodology — says stunting data from NFHS 2019-21 extrapolated, undernourishment from FAO Food Balance Sheets, not Poshan Tracker. Question is valid, but even domestic data — CNNS 2018 wasting 17.3%, NFHS-5 wasting 19.3% — matches.

Score 24.1 is not about lack of food. It is about lack of nutritious food at affordable price, with clean water, maternal health, early feeding.

Free rice keeps hunger at bay. It doesn't build height.
