High speed train slammed into another that had stopped on tracks in Spain Wednesday, killing at least 68 people and injuring dozens in second deadly rail collision this year.
Spains Transport Minister Oscar Puente said accident was caused by what he called inexplicable order from central command centre for trains after security system had failed. Rail system operator ADIF said crash occurred Wednesday morning in province of Toledo, involving two high speed trains carrying hundreds of passengers heading same direction from capital Madrid to Seville.

Train operated by state owned RENFE company struck rear of another train operated by private company IRYO that was stopped. Collision derailed two carriages on tail of IRYO train and front of RENFE train.
Regional government for Castilla La Mancha confirmed death toll and said 58 people needed medical treatment. Rescue workers continue to search for survivors and bodies.
Timeline per Minister Puente. At 8.30 am, security system on stretch of 63 kilometres stopped working due to computer malfunction, causing all trains on that stretch to stop. But central command told RENFE train to start running again without any speed restrictions, and it ended up colliding with stopped IRYO train at 8.53 am.
Quote, "Today all of Spain is grieving," Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said from crash site, where he announced three days of national mourning. Until this year, there had been no fatal crash on Spains high speed lines since network opened in 1992. It was source of national pride. AVE network 3,200 km second largest after China, pride Spain.
January accident memories fresh. Another train crash involving same two companies in which 46 people died. Same route Madrid to Seville, same operators. Questions on liberalization. IRYO is private operator owned by Trenitalia, Italian state railway, entered Spanish market 2022 competing with RENFE on Madrid Seville and Madrid Barcelona corridors. Competition led to more trains per hour, pressure on ADIF signalling capacity.
Investigation will probe if private and public coordination failed, and if European Train Control System Level 2 fallback not followed. Standard protocol is stop all trains until system restored, not manual override.
For India, parallel is building Mumbai Ahmedabad bullet train 508 km, Shinkansen technology, ETCS Level 2, but also central command. Spain lesson is computer malfunction should lead to absolute block, not manual override. Indian Railways Kavach system automatic train protection must have override safeguards, human error must not cause crash.
