MOYALE, Kenya-Ethiopia border — Tens of thousands have fled southern Ethiopia into northern Kenya after fighting erupted between forces from the Oromia and Somali regional administrations in the disputed border town of Moyale.

Al Jazeera reports at least 30,000 displaced people now need aid, shelter and medical care on the Kenyan side. By Oct 28, UN said number had risen to 36,000, and Kenya National Human Rights Commission said up to 40,000 — mostly women and children.

The trigger, according to reports, was the display of the Somali regional flag in an area administered by Oromia, followed by the killing of a 13-year-old girl on Oct 18 in an area administered by the Somali region. Clashes escalated from Sept 20, with regional forces deploying heavy weapons on Oct 22. Nine dead initially reported, with gunfire and burning buildings visible from Kenyan Moyale for two hours Saturday night.

The root is decades old. Ethiopia redrew internal boundaries along ethnic lines in the 1990s under federalism. Oromia and Somali regions share a border stretching more than 1,400 km, where competing claims over grazing land, water, trade routes have fuelled recurring conflict. Moyale was among areas where a 2004 referendum to settle hundreds of disputed kebeles could not be held. Violence along the boundary escalated sharply in 2017-19, displacing more than 1 million people.

On the Kenyan side, Marsabit County is overwhelmed. County Commissioner Stanley Kamande said 15,000 are sheltered across eight temporary camps — Manyatta Madrassa, Sessi, Sommare, Harhosa School, St Mary's Catholic, Taqwa Mosque, schools, churches — while 20,000+ are hosted by relatives.

"There are crucial needs — blankets, tents, mosquito nets, washrooms and sanitation," Kamande said. At Sessi camp, 1,500 have no toilets and are forced to defecate in open. Kenya Red Cross is organising hot meals, health services, but food, clean water, sanitation short. Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers vulnerable.

Kenyan security forces have reinforced border to prevent spillover. Police reported three incidents of stray bullets in Moyale last week. Local leaders warn influx could overwhelm host communities already struggling with drought and climate-linked food and water shortages, and that rains could bring disease outbreak.

For India watching Ethiopia, this mirrors our own resource conflicts — land, water scarcity made worse by climate change plus unresolved federal boundaries can ignite quickly. Moyale is a key trade corridor on the Addis-Ababa - Nairobi highway, and its closure hits East Africa supply chains.
