Sharma served in medical and administrative branches - led Command Hospital Bengaluru, handled medical logistics during Balakot and Covid airlifts, and managed HR and welfare of 12,000 air warriors. Her new role will be at Air HQ handling administration and medical operations.
From gender lens, this is powerful signal. In 2015, women were 1.5% of IAF, not allowed in fighter stream. In 2026, women are 8% of IAF, fly Rafale and Tejas, command missile squadrons and now sit in policy chairs. Supreme Court's 2020 order on Permanent Commission opened top ranks.
For young girls in Tier 2 and 3 towns, Sharma is inspiration. She came from middle-class family in Himachal, joined AFMC Pune, rose through merit. Message - armed forces now reward talent, not gender.
