Uttar Pradesh is facing a massive flood emergency. More than 17,500 people have been evacuated from 26 flood-affected districts, the State government said on Friday, with no loss of life or livestock reported so far - a rare administrative success.
Eight rivers are flowing above the danger mark, pushing water into residential colonies. In Varanasi, residents were seen using boats to travel through waterlogged streets, a stark image of urban flooding. The affected districts include Varanasi, Amroha, Ayodhya, Azamgarh, Ballia, Barabanki, Basti, Chandauli, Farrukhabad, Ghazipur, Gonda, Gorakhpur, Hardoi, Kasganj, Kanpur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Mirzapur, Moradabad, Pilibhit, Prayagraj, Raebareli, Rampur, Sant Kabir Nagar, Shahjahanpur and Unnao.
According to the Relief Commissioner's office, around 3.53 lakh people have been affected, while 4,847 are currently in relief shelters. The scale of relief is huge: 72,897 flood kits and more than 3.67 lakh lunch packets have been distributed.
Analytically, the crisis shows two trends. First, eastern UP's river systems are experiencing more frequent high-flood events, linked to upstream discharge and erratic monsoon. Second, urban centres like Varanasi, Prayagraj and Gorakhpur are increasingly vulnerable as river water enters the city grid. The zero-casualty claim, if verified post-water recession, would mark a shift from reactive to proactive disaster management. However, the real challenge begins after water recedes - water-borne diseases, crop loss and return rehabilitation.
