For two days, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has been detained while marching to Jantar Mantar. His demand is blunt: Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar must resign over alleged vote chori. His statement - "We will not stop till he resigns" - converts a technical debate about SIR into a moral battle to save the Constitution.

The Congress strategy is high-risk, high-optics. Visuals of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra clutching the Constitution on the street, Mallikarjun Kharge on a bus, and Gandhi being carried by police are designed to go viral. The charge that FIRs for dharna at Akashvani Bhavan are filed while concerns about electoral rolls are ignored creates a David vs Goliath narrative.

From an Indian perspective, this matters because the ECI is one of the few institutions that still commands trust across party lines. Allegations of mass deletion under the Absent, Shifted, Dead, Duplicate (ASDD) category - 58 lakh in Bengal alone - if true, strike at the core of one person-one vote.

The government, meanwhile, banks on procedure. The CEC cannot be removed by street pressure. Samajwadi Party's absence shows cracks in INDIA bloc. Yet, by refusing a meeting with the President and letting detentions continue, the state risks confirming the Opposition's claim that it is scared of Gen Z.
