The Char Dham Yatra's helicopter gamble claimed six lives again. On Friday afternoon, a privately run chopper carrying five pilgrims from Badrinath crashed into hillside at Chai village, Joshimath, amid overcast weather. All six, including pilot, dead. Bodies found near wreckage Friday evening, but operation suspended due to darkness, wild animals, terrain. On Saturday morning, SDRF, NDRF, district teams trekked from Pandukeshwar, alternative routes from high villages, to bring remains to nearest road - operation took hours due to high-altitude inaccessibility.

By Saturday, UCADA CEO Prateek Jain announced: all charter services under Char Dham Yatra will now run with "two pilot crew configuration" - co-pilot mandatory, and pilot must file weather report after every flight. Overcast + valley flying + pilot fatigue + pressure to complete trips in

Centre's UDAN for pilgrimage made flying affordable but safety audit lagged. Two-pilot rule, long demanded by pilots association, will increase cost but may cut accidents. Need also mandatory terrain awareness warning systems, flight data recorders - currently not mandatory for light choppers.
