Tamil Nadu tightens grip on women-led electronics manufacturing. State now accounts for 42% of India's electronics exports, and 38% of factory workforce are women vs 20% national average.

At Foxconn's Sriperumbudur plant, 25,000 women work in shifts, living in hostels. At Tata Electronics Hosur, 18,000 women assemble iPhone casings. This is not charity, it is strategy.

Chief Minister M K Stalin's VISTAR scheme — Validated Investment Support to Transform and Advance Resilience - modernises statistical system to track such gender data, linking incentives to women employment. PM Modi praised it.

Why TN succeeds where others fail? Three reasons: social infrastructure (hostels, buses, crèches), Dravidian legacy of women's education (Tamil Nadu female LFPR 37% vs 25% India), and proximity to Chennai port.

Economic payoff: women have lower attrition in precision jobs, better quality control. Apple found defect rates 15% lower in women-led lines.

For India aiming to be electronics hub - target $500 bn by 2030 - TN model must replicate. States like UP offer land cheaper but lack safe transport. Result: factories get male workers who migrate back during harvest, disrupting output.

There is a dark side too: 12-hour standing shifts, hostel curfews, limited upward mobility. Recent protests at Foxconn over food quality show need for labour rights.

Yet for Indian feminism, this is material progress. When a 22-year-old from Dharmapuri earns Rs 18,000, sends Rs 10,000 home, and delays marriage by 3 years, it changes social structure more than any slogan.

TN's 2026 Budget allocated Rs 2,200 cr for women hostel infra. Centre should tie PLI to 30% women employment mandate.
