Delhi Chief Minister Atishi has issued a sharp rebuttal to a New Year’s message from Lieutenant Governor (LG) VK Saxena, which included pointed criticisms of her predecessor, Arvind Kejriwal. In a two-page response, Atishi expressed hope that the LG would “let go of the baggage of politics” in the New Year and focus on Delhi's welfare.
Her letter outlined 10 key concerns, accusing Saxena of prioritizing criticism over constructive collaboration, engaging in “unnecessary interventions” that delayed crucial projects, and obstructing initiatives like the Mahila Samman Yojana. She further alleged that the LG's office had become a “proxy of the BJP.”
The Chief Minister also criticized Saxena for failing to ensure public safety, a responsibility directly under his mandate. She cited incidents of alleged illegal activities, stating, “While an ex-MP has been distributing money to lure voters from his illegally occupied bungalow, your response of providing police protection for this activity sets a benchmark for irresponsible behavior.”
Highlighting rising crime rates, she added, “While women and children face daily kidnappings and assaults in Delhi, you have focused on mudslinging and conducting raids against our leaders.” Atishi accused the LG of damaging the reputation of his office and tarnishing the legacy of his predecessors.
Lt Governor’s Remarks
In his letter, the LG commended Atishi’s administrative efforts, contrasting her work with Kejriwal’s tenure. “This is the first time in my tenure that I see a Chief Minister actively handling government departments and addressing governance issues,” he wrote, while criticizing Kejriwal for not fulfilling his constitutional duties. Saxena also took issue with Kejriwal’s description of Atishi as a “temporary Chief Minister,” calling it a disregard for constitutional principles and an insult to democratic institutions.
Defense of Kejriwal’s Legacy
Atishi firmly defended her predecessor, asserting that the Delhi government remains “deeply rooted in the vision and legacy” of Arvind Kejriwal. “Educational reforms, healthcare advancements, and infrastructure development under his governance have become benchmarks not only in Delhi but across India. The progress we make today is a continuation of this legacy,” she stated.
Concluding her response, Atishi underscored that the people of Delhi have consistently demonstrated their faith in Kejriwal’s leadership and vision.
