HPV Vaccination Mark Crosses 8 Million

The Government of India's National Health Mission achieved a historic milestone on September 12, 2026. The country surpassed the mark of 8 million (80 lakh) successful doses administered under the nationwide HPV (Human Papillomavirus) vaccination campaign aimed at preventing cervical cancer. This achievement is being hailed as a significant victory for India's public health infrastructure and preventive healthcare system.

Five major states in the country have achieved their set targets of 100% coverage in this ambitious vaccination drive. According to the data, Uttar Pradesh led the campaign, with over 2.2 million (22 lakh) adolescent girls and women safely vaccinated. A well-coordinated network of ASHA workers and local health centers at the grassroots level made this success possible.

Cervical cancer has been one of the most serious cancers affecting women in India. This indigenous and large-scale vaccination campaign is expected to lead to a drastic reduction in cases of this life-threatening disease among future generations. The Ministry of Health also ensured that the vaccine was made available—either free of cost or at highly subsidized rates—even in remote rural areas.

Another positive aspect of this campaign has been the dispelling of misconceptions prevalent in society. Government-led awareness programs have increased the acceptance of vaccines in both rural and urban areas. With the cooperation of schools, colleges, and local panchayats, the distribution of vaccines was carried out smoothly and rapidly.
Globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) and other international bodies have praised India's massive vaccination model. Surpassing the 8-million vaccination mark in such a short period in a country with such a vast population demonstrates India's serious commitment to the long-term health of its citizens, particularly women.
