The Central Government has taken a significant welfare-oriented decision aimed at expanding the mandatory social security coverage under the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). The government has approved raising the monthly wage ceiling for mandatory EPFO coverage from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000. This amendment, introduced after several years, will provide millions of new employees in the organized sector with direct access to Provident Fund (PF) and pension benefits.

The primary objective of this decision is to provide a robust financial safety net for the working population belonging to the middle and lower-middle classes. With the increase in the wage ceiling, employees in the formal sector whose basic salary exceeded ₹15,000—and who were previously excluded from the mandatory PF scheme—will now be able to build their savings through both their own and their employer's contributions.

In the long run, this decision will lead to a substantial increase in employees' savings, ensuring financial stability upon retirement. Furthermore, increased contributions to the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS) will result in a higher monthly pension, thereby reducing financial dependency during old age.

For the corporate sector and employers, this decision will lead to a slight increase in labour costs in the short term, as they will be required to make contributions for the newly covered employees. However, labour experts believe that this move will improve employee retention rates and reduce workforce dissatisfaction.

This initiative marks a significant step towards the universalization of social security in India. By bringing the unorganized and semi-organized sectors into the formal economy, this government effort aims to ensure a more secure and prosperous future for employees.
