In view of the condition of the famous and strategically important Vikramshila Setu over the Ganges River in Bihar's Bhagalpur district, the State Road Construction Department has taken a major decision. Due to renovation, bearing replacement, and overhauling work, the movement of all types of vehicles on the bridge is being completely suspended for three months, starting October 1st. This decision will directly impact road connectivity between North and South Bihar.
The 1,901-meter-long Vikramshila Setu is a crucial link connecting NH-80 and NH-31. Over the years, the bridge's piers, joints, and bearings had deteriorated due to the pressure of heavy vehicles and a lack of maintenance. Cracks in the concrete and the disintegration of the road surface at several locations posed a risk of accidents. Based on technical reports from experts, this major repair work became essential to extend the bridge's lifespan and enhance safety.
The district administration has prepared a comprehensive diversion plan for the movement of the general public and freight vehicles during the bridge's closure. Heavy cargo vehicles will be diverted via the new Ganga bridge at Munger (Aguwani-Sultanganj or the Munger rail-cum-road bridge) and through Begusarai towards the Simaria bridge at Mokama. Arrangements for parallel boat services and alternative routes are being made for smaller four-wheelers and two-wheelers.
This prolonged traffic diversion is likely to cause significant inconvenience to travellers and traders heading to the districts of Bhagalpur, Purnia, Katihar, Araa, and Banka, as well as to the neighbouring state of Jharkhand. There is a possibility of a slight increase in the prices of food grains and construction materials due to rising transportation costs.
The administration and the construction agency have stated that the bearings will be replaced within the stipulated three-month timeframe using state-of-the-art indigenous and imported technologies. Although this closure causes immediate inconvenience to the public, the decision was absolutely essential to prevent a major structural failure in the future and to ensure the bridge remains safe in the long run.
