The war is moving from power grids to data packets.
On September 27-28, Russia's Defence Ministry claimed a sweeping overnight and daytime campaign across Ukraine, targeting not trenches but the infrastructure that moves weapons, drones and information.
According to MOD statements verified by Reuters, strikes hit: a drone assembly and storage site in Kyiv region, logistics hubs in Odesa region, port infrastructure in Reni on the Danube River — Ukraine's lifeline to Romania — and later Vilkovo, Kiliya, Chornomorsk and Odesa ports themselves. Two cargo vessels allegedly carrying military and dual-use goods to Odesa were struck. Kyivstar, Ukraine's largest mobile operator, confirmed its head office was hit, with no casualties.

Most significant is the new focus on telecoms. The ministry listed data centers belonging to Vodafone Ukraine, Kyivstar and Omega Telecom which it described as "the largest companies providing mobile communication and high-speed internet services" to the Ukrainian military plus two telecommunications centres serving the army. A large warehouse in Krasilovka village, Kyiv region, belonging to German logistics firm Zammler Group, was shown burning for hours on video; Moscow says it stored Western military aid.

Analysts in Russian milblogs are calling it "Operation X" — X for intelligence. The logic mirrors Iran's 2026 targeting of US-Israel data nodes in the Gulf: degrade the enemy's information and communications network (ICN) rather than just its ammunition.
This marks three shifts. First, geography: hitting Danube ports pushes the war to NATO's border. Second, target set: from energy in winter 2022-24 to logistics and digital in autumn 2026. Third, method: long-range Geran drones and gliding aerial bombs, cheaper than Kalibr missiles, allowing nightly saturation.

Reuters could not independently verify damage or vessel identities, and Ukraine has not confirmed military cargo. Kyiv has reported fires in office buildings and connectivity issues.
