Supreme Court ahead of Diwali: Won't impose total ban on firecrackers, nor allow unrestricted use. Green crackers allowed with time limits, NEERI study cited for emission cut.

With Diwali only weeks away, Supreme Court Wednesday rooted for balanced approach saying it will neither impose complete ban on firecrackers nor allow unrestricted use.

Justice M M Sundresh presiding over two-judge bench said-

“Neither we are going to agree with you for total ban, nor we are going to allow them to do it burst firecrackers for 24 hours... Total ban will affect sentiments. Allowing them throughout day will have huge impact on every other living being... We need to find solution whereby we can give specified time and we can specify what are crackers to be used."

Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati told SC that NEERI report said new-generation firework formulations with reduced quantity of barium salts/nitrates and other oxidizers achieved particulates emission reductions 45-60%. Centre said study in Bhopal, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai to assess impact on ambient air quality due to barium content in generation-2 green crackers. Outcome will be placed before court.
