ITBP D-G says face-off with China continues - The location is near Maja company operating base in Taksing circle of Upper Subansiri district, sources added. Our newly raised Shaurya commandos played exemplary role in this. ITBP was raised as mountain guerrilla force and we were given border guarding duty along China in 2004, ITBP chief said. We need not leave our original function, and specialised high altitude mountain fighting force is being set up, distinct than army. We will soon have one full battalion of Shaurya commandos; high-altitude deployment is our strength, Mr Kapur added.

Situation has persisted even though Chinese President Xi Jinping attended 18th BRICS Summit hosted by India from September 11 to 13, and two nations have held three high-level border talks since July. 36th WMCC meeting on India-China border affairs was held August 6, followed by 25th round of talks between Special Representatives on Boundary Question August 26 in Beijing, where India was represented by NSA Ajit Doval.

Houthi conflict: Indian killed in Dammam - Targeting of civilian vessel carrying Indian nationals raises serious concerns about safety of international navigation and potential for civilian casualties, Yemeni militia said. The Houthi Armed Forces are carrying out rescue operations for those on board, with further details to be provided later, they said, according to Al-Masirah television. Indian Embassy in Yemen responded to reports on attack on yacht. We are ascertaining further details about incident and will provide all possible help for ensuring safety and well-being of Indian nationals, it said in post on X.

India, Poland to double bilateral trade by 2030 - Mr Tusk expressed support for India's candidature for United Nations Security Council's non-permanent seat for 2028-29 and for permanent seat in reformed UNSC, and hoped for Indian support for Poland's ambitions to join G-20. US President Donald Trump has invited Mr Tusk to G-20 this year in Florida, where Poland expected to submit its request. India has not publicly shared details of four-point proposal that Modi government is discussing with counterparts in Moscow and Kyiv, with view to forge agreement between Russia and Ukraine that would stop attacks on civilians, allow grain and energy exports from both countries through Black Sea, and end targeting of ships and seafarers, including many Indians, who have been casualties of four-and-a-half year war. Highly placed officials denied India is mediating in conflict, but said it is in close contact with both sides over specific proposal, and government hopes to hear bar from both Russian and Ukrainian sides soon.

Analytically, ITBP face-off near Taksing shows LAC disengagement at Depsang and Demchok in 2024 did not end eastern sector friction. Arunachal's Upper Subansiri is new hotspot after Yangtse 2022. Shaurya commandos - ITBP's new mountain guerrilla battalion - indicates India moving from border guarding to offensive mountain warfare, distinct from Army. For China, Taksing close to its permanent village construction in Longju, which India claims.

If face-off continues despite BRICS summit bonhomie, India-China normalisation remains tactical, not strategic.
