Is Congo Hosting Hunger Games?

The world wants green energy. Congo pays with blood batteries — 70% of world's cobalt, $3.28 a day, no contract, no union, 40,000 children underground.

What is going on in DR Congo is not mining. It's hunger games.

Congo holds over 50% of world's cobalt reserves, worth an estimated $24 trillion in total minerals. In 2024-25, it produced 70-76% of global cobalt — the metal in your EV, iPhone, laptop. 76% of that supply came from just two provinces: Lualaba and Haut-Katanga.

But how?

There are two mines. Industrial — huge concessions owned by Glencore, CMOC, controlled by Chinese traders who handle 70-80% of Congo's production. And artisanal — ASM.

Artisanal sounds like craft bread. It isn't. It is 150,000 to 200,000 men, women, and an estimated 40,000 children digging by hand with pickaxes, shovels, rebar, headlamps, no supports, no ventilation, no contract.

University of Nottingham Rights Lab report Blood Batteries (August 2025) surveyed 1,431 miners in Lualaba and Haut-Katanga:

- 36.8% in forced labour, 9.2% child forced labour, 6.5% debt bondage, 4.4% trafficked

- 56.9% suffering severe exploitation

- 41.9% punished for “not working hard enough”

- 9.5 hours per day, average pay: $3.28 a day. Men $3.52, women $1.84

- 87.8% entered because they had no other means to survive. 70% want to quit but cannot.

-  No union. 0% had a written contract.

- 27.7% started as children. Some as young as 7.

- Nearly two-thirds have chronic health issues — respiratory disease, skin lesions, herniated discs, fractures, gastrointestinal bleeding.

They carry 40kg sacks of heterogenite on their backs. Children wash ore with bare hands in toxic water. Heavy metal concentrations in water up to 930 times above WHO limits — arsenic, cadmium, lead, cobalt dust that causes asthma, birth defects.

Tunnels collapse daily. 10,000 to 15,000 tunnels dug by artisanal miners — none with supports. Pit walls bury workers alive. In 2026 alone, dozens die. No compensation. No newspaper report.

And the women — forced to choose between hunger and the mine. As Fair Cobalt Alliance documents, women are banned from pits due to superstition that menstrual cycles make ore disappear, so they get lowest-paid jobs — washing, carrying, crushing. Many forced into sexual exploitation by traders. They bring children because there is no childcare.

Why hunger games?

Because this is green sacrifice zone. Apple, Tesla, Samsung, BMW promote "fully audited, conflict-free" cobalt. US Court of Appeals in 2024 absolved big tech of liability. Due diligence is paper.

Chinese middlemen buy at Kolwezi markets for $2-8 per day. Living wage in Kolwezi is $15.78. Survival wage is not paid.

Congo's own government pledged to end child labour in mines by 2025. Year has come and gone. No count.

A miner told researchers: “When I got home, my whole body ached and I had to go back the next day. It was very sad, the bags were so heavy. The money was barely enough to feed ourselves. Children were getting sick all the time.”

This is not a faraway tragedy. This is supply chain. This is what powers the "clean" transition.

If your battery is green, ask why the hands that mined it are black and bathed in red blood, sweat and tears.
