A revolutionary initiative is being launched in the National Capital Region (Delhi-NCR) to ensure the safety of CNG-powered vehicles and curb the use of illegal or expired CNG cylinders. Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) and the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization (PESO) have jointly decided to install automated Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based cameras and hydro-testing verification systems at all CNG stations.
Currently, many motorists violate regulations by using unauthorized CNG kits or cylinders whose mandatory hydro-testing (verification) validity has expired. Expired CNG cylinders often burst due to high pressure during refuelling, leading to severe accidents and significant loss of life and property. AI technology is being employed to prevent such instances of human error and malpractice.
Under this new system, as soon as a vehicle arrives at a CNG pump for refuelling, AI cameras will instantly scan the vehicle's number plate and the digital 'hydro-testing RFID tag' affixed to the windshield. If the cylinder's testing date has lapsed or the kit is found to be unauthorized, the pump's automatic dispensing system will lock, and the gas supply from the CNG machine will automatically cease.
This automated system will relieve CNG pump personnel of the burden of verification and completely eliminate any scope for human collusion or forced refuelling. Additionally, vehicle owners will receive automated alerts on their mobile phones, prompting them to get their CNG cylinders inspected at authorized centers and obtain a new safety certificate in a timely manner.
CNG vehicles play a pivotal role in controlling air pollution in Delhi. This new AI-powered technology will not only safeguard the millions of CNG vehicles plying the roads of Delhi-NCR against accidents but also demonstrates how modern technology and artificial intelligence can be practically utilized to enhance public safety.
