Iran Guards say mines halted three tankers crossing Strait of Hormuz - Iranian Revolutionary Guards said Tuesday that their naval mines halted three tankers attempting to travel Strait of Hormuz via routes considered illegal by Tehran. "Three violating oil tankers were set ablaze and halted due to explosion of mines planted by brave sailors of IRGC Navy," Guards said. Associated Press.

This comes amid broader West Asia escalation - Israeli fire kills at least four people in separate incidents in Gaza Strip, death toll rises to 73 in Houthi hit on Yemen camp, Islamic State-linked militants kill at least 48 civilians in eastern Mali, attack on market in disputed African region kills at least 153.

For India, Hormuz is jugular - 60% of oil imports pass through Strait. On Tuesday, US oil prices surged 5.7% to $109.60 per barrel, Brent to $111.69 on tight supplies. India's oil import bill nearly 25% higher in August than same month last year. Two-thirds of India's oil imports from just three nations - Russia 44%, US and UAE surging — but all routes via Hormuz except Russian.

If mines actually deployed, insurance premiums for tankers - war risk premium - would jump from 0.5% to 5% of cargo value, adding $5 per barrel. India paid average $810.6 per tonne for US oil, much higher than average $640 per tonne, partly due to insurance.

Iran's claim may be exaggerated - US Fifth Fleet said no verified mine hits, but even claim raises tensions. India has strategic petroleum reserves of only 37 million barrels, 9.5 days cover, versus China 900 million.

Analytically, Iran using mines is asymmetric tactic to pressure US over Gaza commercial goods ban and Houthi escalation. For India, which abstained on Gaza votes but calls for freely navigable waterways per UNCLOS, need to condemn retaliatory attacks while protecting energy security. MEA's earlier statement that Canada as energy superpower will stabilise supplies shows India's new energy diplomacy - sourcing from US, Venezuela, UAE to reduce Hormuz dependence, but still vulnerable.

Need to accelerate release from strategic reserves and diversify to pipeline via Central Asia, though TAPI stalled.
