The Heat That Won't End?

Heat storms, giant heat waves blanketing 85% of globe, named Vera lasted 367 days, now Raimundo broils Europe, named by Yale as supercharged heat waves swarming planet.

Heat storms: giant heat waves - What is it? - Heat waves have evolved from sporadic, isolated episodes to massive, cascading weather events that can blanket vast swaths of planet for months or even years at a time.

To continue calling such sprawling phenomena heat waves would be like calling monsoon a rain shower. To understand new reality of these immense expanses of heat, consultation with two dozen climate researchers and analysis of temperatures worldwide for every hour since 1960 has yielded new concept: heat storm.

Scientists and researchers often discuss global warming in context of risks that will arise if planet's average global temperature rises more than 2 degree Celsius above pre-industrial levels. Ordinary person can't make much of that. However, heat waves are connective tissue between science of global warming and everyday experience. And today supercharged heat waves regularly swarm planet.

Experts have also identified heat cascade as heat storms that run one after other, simultaneously or both. Their duration has also swelled from around two months in 1960s to nine months in early 2000s.

Naming events is powerful way for people to understand that something is happening, Anthony Leiserowitz, director of Yale Program on Climate Change Communication, said. "We don't do that with heat waves," he said, even though heat has been estimated to kill almost half a million people a year.

Largest heat storm on record, named Vera, lasted for 367 days over 2023-2024 and swept over nearly 85% of globe. World is now in grip of heat storm named Raimundo. It broiled Europe and stoked massive wildfires in Spain and France this summer. Since inception on February 28, 2026, Raimundo has touched almost three-quarters of planet's surface.

For India, heat storms explain why 2026 saw 280 heatwave days, why Delhi's power demand hit 9,000 MW, why 1,000 crore industrial policy now focuses on water-efficient cooling for data centres. India ratified Kigali Amendment to phase down HFCs, but cooling itself heats planet - AC Paradox. Heat storm concept shows need for district cooling, passive design, not just efficient AC.

Analytically, naming heat storms like cyclones - Vera, Raimundo - makes invisible visible. For India, which lost 1,500 lives to heat in 2025, official recognition of heat storm as disaster under NDMA could trigger compensation, early warnings, and work-hour protections similar to Brazil's 40-hour week debate.

If Vera lasted 367 days, we are living inside heat storm, not just facing it.
